Genre Analysis (Horror) - BFI Statistical Yearbook

BFI Statistical Yearbook - Genre Information

In order to collect quantitative data on the horror genre, I have referred to the BFI’s 2014 Statistical Yearbook because it is far more detailed and I would not be able to collect this variation of quantitve data from a survey of my own. In the BFI’s own words, ‘The Statistical Yearbook presents in one place all the available statistics on UK film and the UK film industry.’

Analysis
as you can see from the data collected above, our chosen genre (Horror), in the first table is ranked 12 out of 18 other genres:
  • our genre was in the top 10 ("15" rating) classified films of 2014.
  • Annabelle was the top grossing horror film in 2014 with 7.5 million pounds grossing in box office.
  • there were only 29 (4.1%) horror movies released in 2014 which accumulated 22.9 million pounds (2.0% of total) for box office .
  • horror was the 12th most popular genre in 2014.
  • In 2014 only 5.8% of UK films and 5.5% of UK independent films were released in 2014.
Significance
The Horror genre is not as popular as one would think. Mainly because not many people want to get scared and therefore do not enjoy the horror genre. For those who do, I think would enjoy our video. We aim for it to give you chills and be different to other films in the horror genre rather than being a compilation of horror cliche's or parodies. This may be difficult as it requires 'out of the box' thinking and we will not be able to use ideas stemmed from typical horror films. The ideas must be very original if we want to achieve a unique response. We have also decided as a group to target this video towards '15' or over as that is what most horror films are rated as it appeals to those most and younger children may find scenes upsetting. In addition we decided to not appeal to a particular gender but instead appeal to both.

The Registrar General's Social Scale.

This Social Scale is the process in which the British Government defines society through their employment. An advantage to using this scale is that it help's companies to target audiences, but it has also been criticized for being too simple and rigid.

Preliminary task - Script

In the computer room, Brandon types away as Charlotte walks in and peers over at the computer screen. Brandon quickly stops typing and gets up. Charlotte questions Brandon about what he was doing. Brandon denies everything.
Then Kate walks into the room and discovers Charlotte laying on the ground. Kate is in shock and cannot believe what’s in front of her. Kate questions Brandon to find out what happened.

Kate

 Wh-wha-what happened?!...Oh my go- CHARLOTTE!!

Brandon takes a long pause while breathing deeply.

Brandon

Uh-uhmm, nothing happened. Everything’s fine.

Kate

OBVIOUSLY NOTHING IS ‘FINE’!... Who are you?

Kate is breathing heavily while waiting for a response. A scared/horrified look is on her face.

Brandon does not respond back to Kate he returns to his computer and begins to type again.
